Frequently Asked Questions

PMAB stands for Prevention and Management of Aggressive Behavior, a training program designed to equip staff with the skills to recognize, de-escalate, and manage potentially aggressive or challenging behaviors safely and effectively. The training emphasizes safety, communication, and trauma-informed strategies to ensure the well-being of both staff and individuals in their care.

PMAB training is broken into two modules; PMAB Communications and PMAB Protection.

PMAB Communications focuses on developing skills for recognizing and de-escalating potentially aggressive behaviors through effective communication and trauma-informed strategies. This course emphasizes preventing conflicts and creating safe, respectful interactions to minimize the risk of aggression. PMAB Communications is required for all HOTBHN employees, regardless of their role or position within the agency.*

PMAB Protection builds on these communication strategies by adding hands-on training in personal protection techniques. These techniques are designed to ensure safety of all individuals in situations where physical aggression cannot be de-escalated. The course emphasizes safety, minimizing harm, and using protective interventions as a last resort. PMAB Protection is required for all HOTBHN employees who interact directly with consumers.*

*Neither PMAB module is offered to Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) program staff.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training, including Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and Basic First Aid, is required for all HOTBHN staff who work directly with consumers. Staff in administrative roles not involving direct contact with clients are not required to complete this training.

The CPR/AED/Basic First Aid course is a 4-hour, in-person training that equips participants with the skills to respond to cardiac emergencies, perform CPR, use an AED, and provide basic first aid. Certification is valid for two years, after which renewal is required.

After completing the course, you will receive a completion card that must be uploaded to Relias under the assignment CPR/AED/Basic First Aid. Be sure to check your Course Assignments in Relias for your due date to ensure timely completion.

AS+K (Ask About Suicide to Save a Life) is a training program designed to help participants recognize warning signs of suicide, engage in supportive conversations, and connect individuals in crisis with appropriate resources. The course emphasizes practical strategies for creating a safe and supportive environment for those at risk.

This training is required for all HOTBHN staff, regardless of their role or level of involvement with consumer care. Certification must be renewed every three years to ensure staff remain informed and prepared to provide support.
